A project went wrong… but it taught me something every cinematographer needs to understand.

In this video I break down a music video project where an entire set of scenes we carefully built never made the final cut — including a church set designed to create a powerful symbolic visual for the artist.

We spent time designing the look, lighting the space, and crafting visuals that matched the director’s vision. But when the final edit arrived… those scenes were gone.

This experience taught me an important lesson about music videos, filmmaking, and the role of a cinematographer.

In this breakdown I talk about: • Why strong visuals don’t always make the final cut • How the edit ultimately determines what matters in a project • The difference between building visual structure vs building emotion in music videos • Why cinematographers shouldn’t become attached to specific shots • How to handle projects where your favorite work doesn’t get used

If you’re a cinematographer, filmmaker, or creative working on music videos, this is a lesson that will save you a lot of frustration over time.

Filmmaking isn’t just about creating beautiful images. Sometimes the real skill is learning how to serve the project — even when things change in the edit.
