Reduce Minimum Focus Distance Using Diopters

Today’s video discusses how to increase the minimum focus distance on any lens using diopters. I explain that every lens has a minimum focus distance, which can vary greatly. Diopters are affordable accessories that can reduce the minimum focus distance by almost half, allowing photographers, videographers, and filmmakers to isolate subjects better and create more background separation, especially with slower lenses. The diopter used in this video is the SLR Magic diopter with a 77mm thread that costs $129, with its all-metal construction and compatibility with step-up rings. It’s important to note that while diopters are useful, they compress the image and reduce the natural field of view, and cannot fully replace a true macro lens. Diopters are particularly helpful for anamorphic lenses which typically have poor minimum focus.
