The video covers my reasons for purchasing the Sony FX30 in 2025.
#1. FX30’s timecode capabilities simplify multi-camera setups, reducing reliance on clap sync and waveform sync, especially beneficial for scenarios involving three or more cameras.
#2. The FX30 serves as a suitable B or C camera within the FX series, offering CINEI workflow, timecode, and shutter angle support, particularly valuable given the $300 discount bringing the price to $1,500.
#3. I don’t require the 12,800 ISO dual base found in cameras like the FX6, as their work doesn’t often involve scenarios needing such high ISO, making the FX30’s 2,500 ISO sufficient.
I also address the differences between Super 35 and full-frame sensors, noting the aesthetic of background separation in full-frame but emphasizing the continued relevance of Super 35. While full-frame cameras generally have better rolling shutter performance, I find the FX30’s rolling shutter acceptable for most real-time shooting situations.
Finally, I point out limitations of the FX30, including the inability to record internally while outputting 4K through HDMI and the inability to use shutter angle when outputting 4K HDMI.
